When you're a bit bored of a subject, it's REALLY easy to get distracted by something shiny. A little distraction isn't always a bad thing, but when you get stuck in a bit of a loop... it can take days to get out of it...
Doing something boring doesn't give you that same feeling of success, it's just a bit of an "ok, job done" moment then moving on to the next thing... Usually it's ok, you just move on and hopefully something about it keeps you focused. But... the problem comes when you have an endless list of really boring tasks... staying on track is near impossible.
Often when I'm in this position end up picking up my phone and start Googling something interesting. It might be something that's on my list to research or it could just be something random... but as I'm reading it, something I'd normally skim over gets my attention. I then start Googling that...
The next time I time check it's 2 hours later and I've been reading or watching on YouTube everything to do with the subject, and every little side quest. It happens... it's not the end of the world. Lets get back on track...
Actually... maybe I'll just check something... aannnddd back down that rabbit hole.
It's really hard to stay focused sometimes, it takes a real effort. To stay focused on a boring task can consume a huge amount of energy and it's easy to go chasing a quick dopamine hit. Set yourself a goal with a reward of something interesting at the end, and make sure it's a defined scope so you don't end up down that rabbit hole again...
