There’s loads of version control solutions out there, good ones, like GIT and…. well… GIT. Every day I tell people, don’t store stuff on your laptop… sync it to a repo… add a good commit comment not just “stuff”. Organised life, organised mind…
Do I do that? Do I balls… At the end of the night after coding for fun, I zip up the main project folder and name it something like app-newscreen.zip… Not even app-newscreen followed by a date stamp, nope… the modified date time solves that issue.
The problem, these bloody zip files end up scattered across my desktop, documents, downloads… random USBs that I chuck in a drawer and forget about… basically anywhere.
A couple of months later I have an idea, remember I made it before, go to look for it and find hundreds of zip files with similar name… nothing date stamped, all with the modified date time from the last decided to move them… great. Then it’s hours of opening them up, and trying to work out which one I changed last…
Was the last version I saved working…? Was I working on a new feature that I gave up on… is there another copy on yet another old USB…?
Screw it, I’ll just start again…
