Building apps is fun… and so is picking a good name. The problem… someone probably picked that good name before you and grabbed the best domain…
Obviously every idea I have is going to change the world… so as soon as that idea pops into my head… off to the registrar I go. Sometimes I spend more time thinking of a name and finding a good domain than I actually do building the thing… but hey… at least if it goes somewhere… I have a good domain.
A couple of days pass… I get bored of the idea and start building something else. Renewal day comes round 12 months later… and I have a decision to make. Do I keep the name I spent far too long agonising over, or… so I let it go?
9 times out of 10 I opt for binning it… domains cost money, money is better spent working on the next great idea. Months go by… and then all of a sudden… a new idea. Wait! I already have a good domain for that! I registered it last year for something else… and… it’s gone. I let it go… and worse… someone else got it…
A couple of years go by… checking the domain for any sign of activity. No site… the domain doesn’t resolve… Maybe they’re like me… maybe they’ll let it expire…? Nope… still taken. I check a couple of months later, it’s there… buy it now…!
Domain re-acquired, app development re-starts… I get bored… development stops… 12 months later it’s renewal day and… I let it go… again…
