Hyper-focus, the ability to lock into one subject and fire 200% of your energy on it is great! You can get a lot done, to a very high standard too… but… the skill is only unlocked when you’re interested in the subject…
Those subjects are the fun bit like creating a skeleton of an app, building out a new screen, adding appearance features like changing the screen colour (the most useless feature, but users ALWAYS ask for it…), or a completely new thing that no one else has ever thought of…
Fully locked in… 200% focus… life is good…
Then you get to about 90% in… working through those annoying bits… basic functions… test rigs… exception handling… those bits are boring. Hyper-focus mode becomes disabled… you’re burnt out from the other 90% you smashed through… not only do you have 10% left but you’re probably only running at a 10% capacity…
Nightmare…
This is where the majority of ADHD projects fail… as a developer you need a nudge… you need a focus… if you’re in it on your own… that just won’t happen.
One more project on the shelf… maybe I’ll come back to it next year…
